Security CD for older OSes

A little while before they released SP2 for Windows XP, Microsoft
stopped sending out the February 2004 Security CD found here
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp (presumably
because they were busy making a new CD for XP-SP2). However, the CD had
updates for Windows 98, 2000 and ME. The SP2 disk is only SP2 for XP. Is
there any possibility Microsoft will make an updated security CD for the
older OSes, or at least rerelease this CD? (They can take off SP1 and
the post SP1 updates for XP, and use the space to put in post SP4
updates for 2000.) I still have a computer at home with Win98 (which is
too old for XP and still somewhat useable -- I have an XP machine as
well, so I'm no luddite.)

I disagree about putting post-SP4 updates on instead of SP1 - as I think
that'd either delay such a *re-release* or guarantee that it doesn't happen.
They should just re-release the CD with or without SP1.

There wouldn't be any great concern about SP1 still being on there just so
long as XP users don't end up ordering the CD in the belief that they need
it. If they had SP1 or SP2 already installed, the CD would do nothing. If
they had neither, the CD would be a good idea for them too assuming the
fairly unlikely situation where they managed to hear about it, but not about
SP2.

But the bottom line is - the CD should still be available for 98, ME and W2K
users. People format and re-install Windows and there are people new to
these OSes. I've already sent a copy of the CD to a guy who hadn't known
about it (and I don't intend to make a habit of it!). The irony is I'm in
the UK and he's in the US.

Microsoft have slipped up by discontinuing the CD. Presumably the bean
counters made the decision.

meant they weren't going to profit from it....

Or anyway, not make a loss from it. Usually bundling involves sponsorship.
Maybe CA decided there was insufficient take-up of the EZ Armor deal when
set against an anticipated payout of the order of:
