Myappologies for duplicate posting in 3 WIN98 newsgroups, but I'm not
sure which newsgroup is appropriate for this problem.

My newly fresh install of WIN98SE "normally" has a light green
background color for desktop, the default background color.

Periodically when WIN98SE starts, the desktop background color is
DIFFERENT, is instead a rich dark blue.
Also, UNTYPICAL, normally NEVER SEEN on desktop, are
-----------
MICROSOFT [the LOGO]
WINDOWS 98
-----------
Finally, when I click that LOGO it starts IE6.0 and brings up the
WINDOWS
UPDATE service.

After a couple of reboots, the desktop reverts back to normal background
color and MICROSOFT LOGO WINDOWS98 disappears.

What is causing the desktop color to periodically turn deep blue and add
this LOGO? Is this possibly NORMAL? What can I do to prevent this?
Scans for Virus, Trojans, SPYBOTs say machine is clean.

Thank you for any help, Dave

Right-click an empty part of the desktop, select Properties, choose a
different background than the "Windows 98" background you currently have
selected.

Turn off Active Desktop, which uses that blue background:
Right-click the desktop, in the menu that appears click to remove the check from Active Desktop.
